High profile Anti-Gay campaigner holidays with male prostitute

Leading U.S. anti-gay activist George Rekers has come under intense media pressure to respond to claims that he took a male prostitute on holiday.

Professor Rekers, 61, a high profile Baptist minister who promotes himself as a “scientific” voice in the anti-gay movement, is on the board of NARTH (National Association for Research & Therapy of Homosexuals) – an organization that claims it can “cure” homosexuality.

Earlier this week a media storm erupted over photographs of Rekers and a 20 year old rent boy known as ‘Geo’ taken at Miami international airport last month.

The pair were photographed returning from a 10-day holiday to Europe which included visits to Madrid and London.

Rekers, a father of three, has denied any “illegal or sexual behaviour” claiming that he hired the youth as a travel assistant.

In a phone interview with the Miami New Times Rekers explained: “I had surgery, I can’t lift luggage. That’s why I hired him” claiming he was initially unaware that Geo was a prostitute until halfway through the trip.

Rekers later contradicted himself in an interview with gay blogger Joe Jervis by saying that his intent was to help the escort.

“I have spent much time as a mental health professional and as a Christian minister helping and lovingly caring for people identifying themselves as ‘gay.’ My hero is Jesus Christ who loves even the culturally despised people, including sexual sinners and prostitutes. Like Jesus Christ, I deliberately spend time with sinners with the loving goal to try to help them.” He said.

It has since been revealed that Rekers hired ‘Geo’ via male prostitute website rentboy.com

As media interest on the story snow-balls around the world organizations involved with Rekers appear to be disassociating themselves.

NARTH has yet to make any official comment on the matter however the Miami New Times reports it has received contact purported to be from the organisation claiming “complete surprise”.

The US’s leading Christian lobbying group the Family Research Council, co-founded by Rekers, has denounced his alleged behaviour and denied any association with Rekers within the last 10 years.
